You make a good point. Where I worked I had both 401K and Roth401K contributions. All of the company match went into the 401K. I could look at the account online and see both halves with balances. When you chose what to invest in all the money was invested in the same funds, but the balances were viewable by type. When I left that job all the 401K money was sent to a Rollover IRA. All the Roth401K money went to a Roth IRA. All Roth contributions and appreciation went to the Roth. All Company match went to Rollover IRA. Have you Son ask the HR department how it works at his company.
