I would assume it would be fully integrated. Tim has a valid point, at this time the batteries cannot handle the sub zero temperatures. It is more than that they will not operate or not be able to heat, they must not be allowed to get to a point where they are permanently damaged.

They would have to be protected from the cold both by active and passive measures. I do not see that it is even a minor engineering challenge. There certainly is no basic research that needs to be done.
