You might remember the Humane Society of Louisiana from the 2005 Foolanthropy campaign. They're still struggling to rebuild from hurricane Katrina and they're launching a fundraising campaign. Apparently they remember and appreciate the support Fools have given in the past.
Excerpt (emphasis added):
With the second anniversary of Katrina approaching, the support of Fools and other animal friendly donors from outside of Louisiana continues to be critically needed. At the same time in New Orleans, competition among nonprofits for charitable donations is fierce, while local donors are often in less of a position to give. Confounding this situation is the fact that private animal protection groups and shelters have always been forced to be extremely self reliant. Such groups do not receive United Way funding, tax dollars, or support from any national animal protection agency or parent group. All humane societies and SPCAs are independent, with each local shelter surviving on its own merits, through the hard work and dedication of its staff and volunteers. With our shelter in New Orleans destroyed, HSL received no major grants for rebuilding our headquarters from any national animal protection group, nor did we receive adequate insurance compensation for our losses. Echoing the experiences of so many people and businesses impacted by the hurricane, our group is still paying a mortgage on a shelter building we cannot afford to demolish, on land we have so far been able to sell. Our nonprofit is ineligible to receive any federal recovery grants or loans for rebuilding. At the same time, our costs have skyrocketed, as we continue to provide care for more than 100 animals rescued during Katrina, apart from our other program costs. With ongoing budget shortfalls, HSL is making an ambitious push to keep the group in operation. Our PAWS to REBUILD campaign, which seeks to raise $300,000.00 by the end of the 2007, seeks to pay off the existing mortgage on our destroyed shelter building, to compensate HSL for uninsured losses and to recoup other Katrina-related costs. The first phase of the campaign, to raise $50K by (DATE?) is underway. Donations are being actively sought to help us reach that goal. Funds raised during the PAWS TO REBUILD campaign will also be utilized to help secure our emergency shelter site, where we have operated since the storm. The purchase costs of fencing alone, for example, will exceed $30,000.00. Grant funding provided rental fencing for two

Wherever you live in America, the Humane Society of Louisiana is a great organization to support! Animals in the rural South suffer greatly as the result of the poverty, poor education and 'good ol' boy' corruption. The situation is even worse here, since Katrina.
