For me it serves many purposes, but the #1 reason, is, as you mentioned, just the sheer pleasure of it. Reading entertains, it teaches, and it is an escape from reality on the days when life is ho hum. It can keep your imagination and mind active, and it allows you to live life vicariously through others.
